I do know it periodically redistributes the data, or at leat I believe that is what is going on, as I will periodically here the drives working and if I look at the WHS console I'll see a reference to "Storage balanced on nn/nn/nnnn nn:nnpm" that usually corresponds to the time I heard the drives, hence my assumption that it's › ★ Brother Charger 622 Manual Lymphatic Drainageĭownload Ragnarok War Of Gods Apk Offline on this page. However, if your data totaled 1100GB then you would be out of luck, unless you were removing the fourth drive and still had three in the server. So using our 500GB example, if you have 3 drives and your data totals 750GB, you would be fine as 750GB would fit on two 500GB drives. The catch is if you have more data than will fit on the remaining drives, whether it be 1, 2, or 3, then you won't be able to remove the drive. You can add and remove drives as you like.

As you add drives and data it's basically balanced across all of the drives. I do recall seeing a message somewhere on one of the WHS forums mentioning they had to do a server restore and were glad to see all there data was there and that they didn't have to go back and restore all of it as well, so I interpreted that to mean it was the system disk the restored, but I'm not sure and didn't think to ask at the time.Īs to your example, sorry I wasn't too clear in my explanation. I'm not sure what all is involved if you lose the system disk, but I probably should figure that one out, since it's inevitable that it could go at some point. Now how it does that I'm not sure, but I do know the WHS team specifically stated it is not RAID. You implement it on a folder-by-folder basis telling the O/S which folders you want duplicated. Once you have a second drive then the option to use Folder Duplication comes into play. When I added the second 500GB drive to the unit and said make it additional storage, after it went through it's process the storage now said I had 950GB total and when looking at my shares they reflected the increased size as well. Looking at the storage on the server and via the shares it showed x amount available (Let's say 450GB as I can't remember how much overhead was taken by the O/S and such).

So in my case, when I first purchased the unit it came with a 500GB drive. If you select additional storage then it is just added to the "pool". With the Folder Duplication and the WHS console essentially what happens is, you add a disk to the unit and you'll be prompted as to whether you want to use it as additional storage or for backup purposes.

Although it's Windows Server 2003 underneath, you generally don't work with the O/S directly you do everything through the WHS console and access the server via the Shares you setup. There is no RAID per se as it's using the Folder Duplication mentioned above.

It just sits in the corner and does its thing. I've had it since last August and it's been great. There is some fan noise but nothing outlandish. I have the EX470 with two 500GB SATA drives in it and it is relatively quiet.
